Our love of desserts takes us to Orange County this week, where Afters Ice Cream serves up a worthy addition to the latest dessert fusion craze – their “Milky Bun” – a warm donut sliced open, filled with ice cream and yes re-sealed with batter in a press. The fruition of this four step process (choose, fill, seal, eat) is the magical Milky Bun – a delicious contrast between the warm dense donut sweetness and the encased silky cool ice cream goodness. Our DT photographer extraordinaire Michelle’s close friend, Raymond So introduced her to Afters. It’s one of his favorite ice cream sandwich places, and below is what he had to say about it.
Afters Ice Cream

Fountain Valley, CA 92708
Raymond: At a time when today’s hottest food trends are increasingly mashups of two unlikely items (Cronuts anyone?), Afters’ famous Milky Bun lives up to the hype and oh is it good. Yes, it’s technically a ice cream donut sandwich. But it’s also so much more.
What makes Afters so special isn’t just the addition of a warm glazed bun, but the unique ice cream flavors that are available to choose from that creates a total taste experience unlike any treat out there. But if the thought of eating a sugary pastry and ice cream all at once is a little too much to handle, that’s okay as their premium-grade ice cream alone is worth the trip. It’s a slick looking shop too.
Popular ice cream flavors like ‘Jasmine Milk Tea’, ‘Milk and Cereal’, and ‘Cookie Monster’ are not only eye catching, but also rich and absolutely delicious. Jasmine Milk Tea tastes just like the real thing, while Cookie Monster combines 3 different types of cookies in the mix. Whether you are looking for something smooth and creamy or fresh and fruity, there’s something for everyone here. The staff even encourages you to sample as many delicious flavors as possible. Top off your Milky Bun with some fixings and you got yourself something chewy, something creamy, and a little bit of crunchy all in one bite. Simply amazing.
